Educators in California have been working just as hard to have sexual orientation included in all subject areas of their state curriculum frameworks. They are also advocating for inclusive library book and textbook adoption policies at the state and local levels. Local Policies From North Olmsted, Ohio, to Decatur, Georgia, people have been successful in amending schools’ antiharassment policies to include sexual orientation. In some places this change happens without a flurry—as in Lawrence, Kansas, where the school board approved the inclusion of sexual orientation during a retreat to revise the school district’s six-hundred-page handbook.

Since then we have proposed that bisexual and transgender be included too, although that proposal has not yet been accepted. Many students identify themselves as bisexual, and these students may feel especially alone, as they may not readily identify with either the gay or straight community. According to the MYRBS, bisexual students are at a greater risk than gay or lesbian students for most risk behaviors. It is also important to include transgender in the name, because transgender students and others who do not conform to traditional gender roles are especially in danger of being harassed.
