From Iranian Rooftops 2009) The one story on the AJE website that had a brief mention of Soltan’s death presented the facts that surrounded her shooting, a statement from the doctor who tried to save her life, and Ahmadinejad’s order to the authorities to investigate her killing. AJE’s coverage of Soltan’s story reflects a general trend that was noticed in the AJE stories included in this study, which is to present the hard facts on the ground and provide feedback from the relevant sources. Both websites included articles referring to the Iranian government’s restrictions on foreign reporters’ coverage of the street protests.
This search term identified fifty-eight articles on the CNN website and forty-nine articles on the AJE website during the one-month period referred to above. Major differences were found between CNN and AJE websites with regard to how they covered the election and the immediate aftermath. To start with, CNN relied more on secondhand information because it did not have any reporters in the area, and that put it at a disadvantage to AJE. AJE had two permanent reporters (Alireza Ronaghi and Teymoor Nabil) on the ground in Tehran and Isfahan.
