Two common IT types from the SJ group are the ISTJ and ESTJ. The ISTJ is task-oriented, organized, practical, careful, determined (Isachsen & Berens, 1988). The ISTJ needs organization and a structure in order to work. He does not tolerate ambiguity well. He needs to understand his task, which should be structured and detail-oriented with a goal of preservation and verification. ISTJs may not like to work on several tasks simultaneously, as closure is very important to them. The ISTJ can be counted on to follow all prescriptions of a methodology and to preserve the established approaches.

Consequently, the SP type is not bound to standard operating procedures. Being managed in a very controlling way will cramp the SP’s style and drain her energy. However, the freedom to work independently will cause this type to flourish. SPs will not appreciate those who are excessively rigid regarding established procedures or those who philosophize without showing results. Of the SPs, it is more the thinking types that are attracted to IS, and more of them would be introverted. The ISTP is probably more suited to maintenance and the ESTP to the help desk.

This activity involves both conceptualization and structure, but with increased emphasis on structure. This is a likely domain for the NTJ (quite possibly an INTJ). There is considerable substance and an increased level of detail in such models. The INTJ is capable of single-minded concentration, has superior analytical ability, and needs to see concepts worked out and applied. Such a person’s thirst for judging and closure allow for ideas generated at a higher level to be processed towards a specific goal.
