HOW BATTERIES WORK A battery does not store electrical energy but converts chemical energy into electrical energy by electrochemical reaction.

The higher the reserve capacity the greater the amp-hours a battery holds. A 6 volt golf cart battery uses 75 amps as the discharge rate, and not 25 amps. A 6 volt battery with a peak capacity of 107 minutes provides 133 amp-hours (75 amps x 107 minutes = 8025 amp-minutes or 133 amphours). 5 volts. This test is conducted at 80°F. The same battery that provides 66 amp-hours using the reserve capacity rating has a capacity of 100 amphours when the 20 hour rating is used. The reason is the 20 hour rating discharges the battery using about 5 amps, and the reserve capacity rating discharges the battery using 25 amps.

36 Managing 12 Volts THE CHARGING VOLTAGE MUST BE GREATER THAN 13 VOLTS When charging a battery, the charging device voltage must be higher than that of a fully charged battery. If the battery and the charging device have the same voltage, no current will flow to recharge the battery. If the battery voltage is higher than that of the charging device, current is from the battery to the charging device and the battery is discharged. If the charging device voltage is higher than that of the battery, current is from the charging device to the battery and the battery is charged.
