There is abundant devotional writing about the teaching purpose of suffering, and I can’t stand any of it. I didn’t think the World Trade Center bombing or the Indian Ocean tsunami or the Sichuan earthquake were sent by God to teach human beings who’s boss, and I’ve never seen my own life story that way, either. I am far from being offended by the randomness of human suffering—I would be troubled by its opposite number, a God willing to rain down horrors on humanity in order to instruct us. It’s one thing to acknowledge that we learn from suffering, quite another to believe that God sends it for that reason.

Of course, it also rendered her unable to experience the stern tug at her sleeve of her repentance about her own life. So it was temporarily useful, but not permanently so. You don’t splint your broken limb forever. It’s just a thing you do while you’re waiting to get it set, so it can start healing for real. She drank more than usual.
