The impact of the supplier meltdown was to create a period of financial uncertainty and make doubtful the ability of some to survive. Nevertheless, the four key suppliers to Vodafone found safe passage by various means, notwithstanding the continuing excess of industry production capacity in an otherwise crowded market. Supplier consolidation began in 2005–2006 with the announced EricssonMarconi, Alcatel-Lucent-Nortel, and Nokia-Siemens transactions. In May 2000 Vodafone in the UK announced the selection of Ericsson for its 3G mobile network infrastructure, the same choice as previously made for the GSM network.

Previously, however, Vodafone in the UK had established a partnership with English cricket that dated back to the West Indies tour in 1997, when they first signed as official team sponsor. In July 2005 Vodafone announced a new four-year deal with the English Cricket Board (ECB), which extended to the England Women’s Team, the England “A” Team, and the ECB National Cricket Academy. The deal will see the partnership continue to develop as the needs of both the team and cricket fans in this country evolve.
