Study Design Meta-analysis (other) Setting Various (meta-analysis) Synopsis This was a meta-analysis of 11 studies of endometrial sampling as diagnostic test for endometrial cancer. The methodology was top notch. Summary likelihood ratios were calculated as measures of diagnostic accuracy. Six brands of devices were represented, of which the most common was the Pipelle device (n = 7 studies). Postmenopausal women represented 79% of the populations studied. The reference (gold) standard was most often dilatation and curettage (D & C), though hysterectomy and directed biopsy were accepted in some studies.

But the study group ran out of money and didn't recruit as many women as they had planned. The final study had 72% power. In other words, although this was a well-conducted study, the statistical aspects are limited. For example, compared with usual care, we would need to screen 2512 (95% CI, 1149-13,544) to prevent 1 breast cancer death over 10 years.
