To simulate the manual method of b l o t t i n g , the b l o t t i n g s t a t i o n employs highly absorbent f i l t e r paper mounted on a set of sponge-backed pads which are programmed to close and encapsulate specimens held between the pads by the robot's fingers (Figure 3 ) . The f i l t e r paper e f f e c t i v e l y removes surface d r o p l e t s , even i f the specimen has i r r e g u l a r surfaces. Custom-designed holders are used to change gripper positions on specimens during the b l o t t i n g procedure and to support specimens on the balance pan during weighing.
