To simulate the manual method of b l o t t i n g , the b l o t t i n g s t a t i o n employs highly absorbent f i l t e r paper mounted on a set of sponge-backed pads which are programmed to close and encapsulate specimens held between the pads by the robot's fingers (Figure 3 ) . The f i l t e r paper e f f e c t i v e l y removes surface d r o p l e t s , even i f the specimen has i r r e g u l a r surfaces. Custom-designed holders are used to change gripper positions on specimens during the b l o t t i n g procedure and to support specimens on the balance pan during weighing.

The RS-232 i n t e r f a c e a l l o w s t h e r o b o t i c arm's c o n t r o l l e r t o communicate w i t h t h e h o s t PDP-11/44. The Zymark equipment has n o t been m o d i f i e d f o r t h i s a p p l i c a t i o n , however, t h e g e n e r a l - p u r p o s e hand has been e q u i p p e d w i t h Dow-designed f i x t u r e s , one f o r t e n s i l e b a r s and a n o t h e r f o r f l e x u r e bars, t o f a c i l i t a t e the h a n d l i n g o f the specimens. The times at which to change the rates of measurement are supplied by the operator to the SETUP program and are read by the data c o l l e c t i o n program from the SETUP file. The frequencies of measurement are fixed. I f measurement of a chromatogram terminates normally, the data c o l l e c t i o n program updates the f i l e i n i t i a l l y written by the SETUP program to r e f l e c t the fact that data have been obtained from that specimen.
