Its spectacular success dealt a deathblow to earth-centered cosmology and undermined medieval theology. It also became the paradigm for all enquiries into the nature of man and of human societies. Descartes (1596-1650), Newton’s contemporary, proposed a machinist view of the world. A confirmed dualist, he contended that body and soul were totally distinct, with the body considered morally inferior to the less material, more ethereal mind. His rationalist theory of innate ideas and description of nature in terms of machines and automatism were the dominant philosophy of the eighteenth century.
