In significant ways, they struggled for self-determined public spaces like bars, bathhouses, 34 / Politics and streets. The gay and lesbian movement faced some challenges similar to those of the women’s liberation movement. In particular, activists struggled with internal hierarchies of race, gender, and class, and these dynamics motivated autonomous lesbian and people of color organizing efforts.

I wrote this book with a few audiences in mind. First and foremost, this is for activists and organizers, particularly those who in some way identify with another politics. To you, I offer this book as my contribution to ongoing conversations. I hope this helps us to become more reflective, imaginative, and effective in our organizing. This is also for those who care about achieving greater justice, peace, equality, and ecological sustainability in the world, and who engage in action, whether electoral campaigns, union drives, or community clean-ups.

In 1997, my friends and I traveled to Vancouver to participate in “crashing the summit” of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), a freetrade agreement among a number of Pacific Rim economies, including the United States and Canada. We joined activists at the University of British Columbia in reclaiming space, camping out in the middle of campus and using school buildings to organize. On the first day of the summit, in what became known as “SprayPEC” in Canada, police hosed down protestors with pepper spray.
