This is almost but not entirely true. What did I know when I began my researches? I knew that some genuine saints have been recognized within the last century, more since 1800, particularly in Russia but also in Greece. But many of the list below were only canonized in 1988, with the millennium celebrations of the Russian Church. In fact, in this world the list of recent saints is actually considerably longer than one might expect it is not the reality, but our view of it, that I am questioning.
Diluted to the point where it lost its power to produce results, and with its credibility weakened because its meaning has been lost, the inner tradition has proved an embarrassment to churches who wanted to appear “scientific,” wanted to be accepted in circles that also appeared scientific.
